June 18-21- 6th NAPF North American Regional Powerlifting Championships (Oranjestad, Aruba); unofficial results:
From Cheryl Anderson;
Just a few details -- Sioux-z Hartwig-Gary broke 3 World master records and all NAPF records in the 52 kg. Jen Perry got a PR deadlift and matched her personal bests in the other lifts. I managed to break the 48 kg. NAPF bench record after finally getting somewhat used to the heat and humidity. Kimberly Walford pulled 490 old-school-style weighing a very light 165/just over 148 and got within inches of 518. Hope to see full results coming out soon.
From Priscilla Ribic;
For the results, don't have any of the details, but at a high level, Sioux-z rocked the platform with 3 World records, The US Open Team took home gold in each weight category other than the 90+kg, which went to Puerto Rico, I believe the Sub Jr and Jrs also took the same. Best lifters were Erin Zinker- Sub jr, Sioux-z - Master, Sioux-z 3rd, Liane 2nd, myself 1st - Open best lifter. Team awards, the US Women did a sweep for Sub Jrs, Jrs, Open and Masters!!!
The Men's team was a little shy on lifters due to Men's Nationals the weekend before, but did a good showing as well. I didn't see the awards ceremonies for the men's, but the US took 2nd in the Open team, 1st in the Master, Subr & Jr. Best lifters went to Tim Smith - Sub Jr, Jim Brown - Master and Big Brad for the Open.
Brad put on an awesome show once again, going 6 for 9 with a questionable depth call on his 2nd squat. His bench seemed a little out of the groove for him this meet, only getting his opener and being the deadlifter that he is, pulled an easy 854 at the end, ending with a 1027kg total.
Huge thanks to our coaches and extra help during the meet. Jim Brown (women's team coach) and Matt Gary (Men's team coach) did an outstanding job!!!!! The first day we had one session with 2 flights and 21 US women to coach and they did it without skipping a beat!

"The Purposeful Primitive"
By Marty Gallagher

Dragon Door is now taking pre-orders for Marty's new book, "The Purposeful Primitive." It is scheduled to be shipped July 1. To order, click here.
This book is 496 pages packed with history of the iron sport and training guidance as practiced by many of the Iron Masters who Marty Gallagher had and still has close contact with. Included are training charts and their nutritional programs. Read how Marty brings together time proven methods used by Paul Anderson, Bill Pearl, Bob Bednarski, Hugh Cassidy, Mark Challet, Doug Furnas, Ed Coan, Ken Fantano, Dorian Yates and finally, "The Prototypical Purposeful Primitive" Kirk Karwoski in developing the Purposefully Primitive Fitness philosophy. Marty, a strength architect who has very successfully built and coached many champion powerlifters is a multi-time national and world champion in both weight lifting and powerlifting. He sets the bar high, but within grasp for those who wish to go from "fat and flaccid to lean and powerful". Marty draws on his years in journalism and also mixes in little known personal accounts to bring clarity to guide the reader to successfully following the Purposefully Primitive method in building strength and fitness. And in the end, it dawns on the reader that there is simply no magic button or fancy fad that holds the secret to success. You won't need large sums of money or the "latest and greatest" piece of equipment, many of which stand in corners of living rooms as dusty monuments of good intentions. Simply use the guidance found in this book. Along with focus, determination and a will to change, you will succeed.

WADA; "Specified Substance Clause"-
As per WADA code "the prohibited list may identify specified substances which
are particularly susceptible to unintentional anti-doping rule violations
because of their general availability in medicinal products or which are less
likely to be successfully abused as doping agents. A doping violation
involving such substances MAY result in a reduced sanction provided that the
athlete can establish that the use of such a specified substance was not
intended to enhance sport performance."
What this means is that WADA now recognizes the possibility for a lifter to
ingest a very low amount of a banned substance unintentionally and without
significant performance enhancement. This is a great step forward in rational
anti-doping policy.
In recent years, we have had several cases in IPF where a medicine was given emergently without Therapeutic Use Exemption, which was otherwise needed. The IPF Medical Committee will continue to provide emergency TUE approval for appropriate medicines when needed. The specified substance clause addresses a different situation...,
Ultimately, every athlete is responsible for what he or she puts into the
body. This new clause addresses unintentional use of lower risk banned
substances. It cannot be stated too often or too clearly: make sure you know
what you are taking. Declare all medicines and supplements to your coach and
physician. Contact the IPF Medical Committee before taking a medicine/product
if you are uncertain.

National Doping Report- Update, click here.
USAPL News:
Recap; NGB Meeting- Rick Fowler submits the following report from the NGB meeting which was held in Killeen, TX on June 12;
Knee sleeves allowed will stay the same. The upcoming Raw Nationals seemed to be part of the rationale since lifters would be setting records wearing the type made of knee wrap material. Removing them would make it tougher to eclipse those records. Bill reported that this was a pretty hotly debated topic. Vote was close, 14-14 I think, with Larry choosing to keep things as is. Good call in my book.
Sponsor logos will be allowed. I don't know the specifics to this one, but it was voted to allow logos of sponsors, possibly to your shirt or gear, in an effort to attract business to sponsor lifters. Before you start ironing logos on your gear, wait for the exact wording on this.
Executive members voted were Bettina (who returns for who knows how many this makes for her), and Greg Page. Great picks. Can't go wrong with these two.
The 2010 Mens Open, Teen and Junior Nationals will be in Palm Springs, CA ran by the Ultra-Professional Lance Slaughter.
2009 Raw Nationals and 2010 Benchpress Nationals will be ran by John Shifflett in Charlottesville, VA
2010 Raw Nationals will be ran by Dan & Jennifer Gaudreau in Denver.
The Police & Fire Nationals was voted to be included with the American Open, which means this year it will be in St. Louis, MO in December. Great news as I would hate to see this shrinking event fall by the wayside.
Coach of the Year was awarded to Joe Lewis of Neenah, WI
The Brother Bennett Award was awarded to Joe Marksteiner. You will not find a better guy for powerlifting than Joe.
Raw Nationals; Mixed Gender Teams- Harold Gaines announces the following concerning scoring of mixed gender teams at the first Raw Nationals;
After much discussion we have arrived at some firm rules for teams of mixed gender at the Raw Nationals. The rules may be changed for future Raw National meets but that will be decided by the Raw Committee, and the NGB per exsisting voting methods.
A quick thanks to Madvig for suggestioning mixed gender teams and to Angela Simmons for driving us to the answers we needed.
Below is a list of rules we will follow this year:
A Mixed Gender team shall consist of no more than 12 lifters with no more than 2 lifters in each weight class.
A Mixed Gender team shall consist of a minimum of 2 female and 1 male lifters.
Team members may be in any division (i.e Master, Teen, Jr, etc), or in multiple divisions, but must declare when the team roster is turned in which division will count for team points.
Point scoring shall be: 12, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, for the first 9 placing in any bodyweight category. Thereafter, each lifter who makes a total in the competition shall be awarded one point.
All teams will be given awards. In the case of a tie, the team having the largest number of first places will be ranked first. In the case of a tie between two teams having the same number of first places, the one having the most second places will be classified first, and so on through the placings.

"Bigger, Stronger, Faster"; Fair, Balanced, Provoking?
At GoHeavy, Steve Denison announces the release of the movie Bigger, Stronger, Faster. In the movie, Mark Bell describes the exploration of steroid use by his brothers and raises a number of points and counter points in the use of the performance enhancers. Read review here, here and here.
From Steve Denison;
I think its a very good movie that tries to dispel the many myths about steroids with the pros and cons. The director goes back and forth and interviews various medical experts on negative and postive sides of steroid use. It also focuses on the Bell family and the 3 brothers with 2 of them using. One is a highly competitive powerlifter, Mark Bell, and the other brother is a WWE has been. The 3rd brother, Chris Bell is the director. He also interviews Carl Lewis, Ben Johnson, Floyd Landis along with that Congressman you see in the preview clip. The movie was well put together and it will make you thnk critically about steroids and their impact on society and sports in general. It received a 4 1/2 star rating from the NY Times. I think you will find the movie worth watching whether you're for or against steroid use.
