Hardcopy Newsletter Editor Wanted- From Larry Maile (President-USAPL)
Looking for a volunteer to manager our hardcopy newsletter. This basically involves selecting content and liaison with: 1. Those with the content, 2. Brian, the gentlemen who sets up the actual newsletter files, 3. selecting/begging for photos, 4. making sure that the electonic file is uploaded to the printer and that Mr. Plante knows that the bills are due to the printer so that they can be paid, proofing the galley proofs.
You do not have to find the advertisers, but some liaison with them so that the way is paved for Mr. Plante and some help with receipt of their advertising files.
All in all, takes about 10 hours per issue.
Please respond to my USAPL email: l-maile@usapowerlifting.com

From Carolina Strength- Interview with Adam Mamola:
Tell me about yourself and your powerlifting history.
My name is Adam. I am 30 years old, and live in Staunton, Virginia. I have a wi Mamolafe, Michelle and two children, Ashley and a son Logan. I enjoy spending time with my family on camping trips. I also like to fish and go to my kids sporting events.
I began lifting weights in high school for football and baseball. I weighed about 120 lbs, so I had to do something to get bigger. In the 9th grade my brother, Kevin convinced me to get into a local power lifting competition between local high schools. I decided to give it a try and won first place in the 123lb weight class. I have been hooked ever since then and that was in 1994. My senior year I weighed about 150 and I squatted around 385lbs, bench 325-335lbs and dead lifted 480-490lbs. A year after graduating, I started my job at Coors Brewing Company. I decided to concentrate on bench only, because I was working a 12-hour rotating shift. Plus I really didn’t like to squat. It’s been a long slow and steady road since then, for me to get to the point I am today. I have never really had any serious injuries.
Just in the past few years, I have surrounded myself with the right people who have helped me have tremendous gains.
Congratulations on being named to the IPF Bench World Team. Tell me about that meet. Where and when is it? What does this meet mean to you?
The IPF Bench World’s is basically the Super Bowl of Drug Free Bench Press Competition. It’s a chance to compare you to the best of the best in the World. It is a team that represents the USA. It will be held in the Czech Republic in the city of Prague from June 25-28, 2008. It is the opportunity of a lifetime to compete against the best of the best.

From Critical Bench; Interview With Luminary Bench Presser Damian Osgood
Interviewed By Ben Tatar of CriticalBench.com - April 2008
1) CRITICAL BENCH: Damian, your journey to a 600+ bench press has been amazing. It has been a true story of blood, guts, sweat, tears, and testicular fortitude. You can now reap the rewards of being the youngest bencher in history to bench over 600lbs weighing less than 200lbs! How young were you?
Damian Osgood: I was 23 y/o I when I hit the Lift, still in the Jr. Class. I weighed in at 178lbs, after cutting down from 188lbs. I hit the Lift at 2007 APF New England Open Bench Press Championship On Nov. 3rd 2007 Helded by Dave Follansbee.
2) CRITICAL BENCH: How did it feel benching 605lbs weighing less than 199lbs? How did you celebrate? What was your initial reaction after benching the weight and what did you do afterwards to honor the achievement?
Damian Osgood: It was amazing Benching 605lbs!! It was something I knew I was able to bench, I just had to put it all together and make it happen! After the Meet I drove 3hrs Home and went Out with a Few of My Team Osgood Crew and had a few drinks, then we came back to my place and finished off the night! My Initial reaction to the lift is hard to explain, I was just so happy and was so proud. I knew right then and there I could compete with the best of the best!

From Critical Bench- Interview With Powerlifter Drew Sheffield of NGBB Elite
As told to CriticalBench.com by Curt Dennis Jr. "The Brute" of Planetrage.com- April 2008
DREW SHEFFIELD...I train with him at NGBB and and he has came a long way as a lifter and as a person. You wouldn't of figured that someone that was built to do long distance running would be squatting 848 and deadlifting near 700. Drew is the example that not just genetic freaks can be powerlifters and not just anyone can be a powerlifter...sometimes it takes more than just strength alone to be one and drew has proven that...also he's prove that if you BELIEVE, you will BECOME...
Critical Bench: Hey, thanks for doing this interview, Drew, please introduce your self.
My name is Drew Sheffield, I'm 21 years old, and student at The Georgia Institute of Technology. I recently totaled 2017 at the GA State APF Championships, which was my first Elite total.
Critical Bench: Congrats. How long have you been into powerlifting?
I started lifting weights my freshman year of college in the spring of 2005 and lifted in my first meet in the Spring of 2006. I went 8-for-9 finishing up with 440/270/501.
Critical Bench: Tell us about your childhood and how you got into powerlifting?
I come from a long line of distance runners so I naturally followed suite as a child and went on to be the captain of my high school Cross Country team. I also played soccer, ran track and wrestled in addition to a short stint as a 2nd string cornerback/free safety on the JV team.
Critical Bench: Who did you look up to when you were coming up as a powerlifter?
The big names of course! Local guys like Jon Grove and Steve Goggins. It was great to live so close to such accomplished lifters. Also the legends of the sport like Vogephol, Coan, Kaz, Capt. Kirk, etc.
Critical Bench: How long have you been at NGBB? How did you hook up with them?
I've been training at NGBB since 2006 after I lifted in my first meet. One of the members, Jon Gordon, offered to handle me at the meet and then invited me to start training at the gym.

Periodization and the Annual Training Plan - Part One
By Matt Gary
Serious and quantifiable improvement, in any quest, necessitates specific goals and objectives with imposed deadlines. If you merely want to get stronger this year, then visit your local gym and start working out. But, if you wanted to squat 500 pounds by June 1, then clearly defined and methodical training is essential.
In part one of this article series, I will give a brief historical account of Periodization then define how it applies to training methodology. I will elaborate on the importance of implementing a defined and time-segmented plan into your arsenal. I will also introduce the annual training plan including the different phases that comprise the year. Characteristics of each phase as well as the phase’s time components will be discussed. Lastly, I’ll present some figures illustrating the Periodization of an annual plan.
It has been said, “If you fail to plan, you may as well plan to fail.” Achieving precise goals requires appropriate planning. Proper planning requires a systematic approach of mapping out methods and strategies at suitable time intervals to ensure task completion. In the realm of athletics and sports, planning is germane to preparing for competition and helping athletes achieve high levels of training and performance. Without blueprints or roadmap directing you toward a goal, the probability of successful achievement is dubious. Your plans should not be so rigid and inflexible to the extent of compromising the integrity of the mission. Coaches and athletes need to be able to discern when to back off and when to push one’s limits. The annual plan simply serves as an outline to direct and focus your efforts.

Interviewed By Ben Tatar of CriticalBench.com
John Dolan is the 100% RAW federations SHW 628 lb raw bencher. He was the first ever to do 600 in the 100% RAW fed and the only one to do it more than once. He also had the highest bench at the Raw Unity Meet.
1) CRITICAL BENCH: John, welcome to Critical Bench. It's great to have you here today. Tell us about yourself!
John Dolan: I am from Chicago Illinois . I am 6'0 and currently compete at SHW. My weight is generally between 310 and 320lbs. I have competed from 242 up. 2) CRITICAL BENCH: John, what federations have you competed in?
John Dolan: In the last year I have competed in the 100% RAW federation and the USAPL. I competed in 2005 in 100% RAW and the ADFPF and WDFPF. Prior to that, I competed in the USAPL, AAU, SAAS, NASA and the old ADFPA. I compete in the open division. I only compete raw or unequipped even if there is no division for it.
3) CRITICAL BENCH: What is the most you have bench pressed?
John Dolan: My best lift raw is 610 at SHW, which I hit at the in Bloomington Illinois at the 100% RAW federation meet on September 8, 2007. I have hit 600 and over three separate times in competition (2X at one meet). In 2005 I won the WDFPF unequipped bench press world meet in England.
4) CRITICAL BENCH: John, was your 600lbs bench press for the first time as exciting as benching 610 or 628? What else do you like about powerlifting meets besides PRs and breaking records?
John Dolan: Hitting 600 for the first time was right up there along with hitting 610 and 628, but my favorite parts of powerlifting meets is getting the opportunity to meet so many great people at the meets. I still keep in touch with guys I met from competing in the mid 90's to guys I have met recently

Lifter News:
Jeff Lewis- Update from Brad Madvig (Webmaster);
I got an update from Jeff Lewis. He says thanks for the fund raiser and the money is being put to good use with medical bills starting to roll in. He is walking 1000 ft a day and has gotten his knees to bend to a 30 degree angle.
He ended the note with the message 'Ill be back'
Sean Siggins- Garage Ink team member, Sean Siggins, is featured in an article published in the York Daily Record;
Standing on a platform in front of hundreds of screaming spectators, Sean Siggins bent his knees, flattened his back and tightened his grip on the bar in front of him.
In one fluid motion, he straightened his legs and back, hauling the bar up to about mid-thigh and held it there.
A 507-pound deadlift, a personal record for him.
It was Siggins' last lift in the USA Powerlifting Police and Fire Nationals on March 29 in Scranton.
An officer with Southern Regional Police who runs the department's K-9 unit, Siggins' numbers in three events -- squat, bench press and deadlift -- garnered him second place.
As the weight thudded to the platform, Siggins, 6-foot-2 and 260 pounds, bounded off the stage and leapt into the arms of coach Dennis "Niko" Hulslander.
Good thing Hulslander is 6-foot and 320 pounds.
Siggins, 34, and Hulslander, 36, have known each other for years, since when Hulslander used to be a deputy with the York County Sheriff's Office. But about a year ago, the two realized they were neighbors when Siggins moved from Jacobus to Stewartstown.
That's when Hulslander approached Siggins and said, "See you Monday, you're on the team," Siggins said.

High School Nationals (April 4-5, Kalamazoo, MI)- Reviews from Joe Lewis, Lance Slaughter and Jack Marcus;
Lewis:
Congratulations to Tod Miller, Bryan See and the entire Plainwell Crew for an amazing High School National Meet. The Meet was run very efficiently and all troublesome issues were dealt with quickly and effectively! As usual, Kathy and Joe Marksteiner did a great job with their computer meet management system. It was great to see so many old friends and put some new faces to names I have been aware of. The quality of the lifting was amazing!!!! We will be able to put together a top quality mens and womens sub-junior team with these fine young champions. Congratulations to Erich Mach's Necedah team for their second consecutive Girl's National title and to Shaun Cosgrove and the Glen Mills crew for adding another boys title to their long and distinguished title run. If we can continue to nurture these fine young athletes into the open ranks, then the future of our sport is in good hands!!!
Slaughter:
I wholeheartedly agree with Joe's comments above. Tod Miller and everyone involved with High School Nationals did an outstanding job. The hotel and venue was first rate and the volunteers did a incredible job of executing a national championship comprised of over 300 lifters on three continuosly running competion platforms. Most impressive of course were the 349 lifters who competed over three days. It is truly inspiring to see these outstanding young athletes perform on the platform. A huge thanks also goes to the coaches and parents who truly embrace powerlifting as a great sport for kids to participate in. The noise and energy of the crowd support is incredible.
It has been said many times before by others and I will repeat it again.
If you have any opportunity to attend a USAPL High School Nationals- GO!
If you are a high school athlete who has thought about competing in this meet- DO IT!
If you know a HS athlete who could compete at this meet- HELP GET THEM THERE!
If you have the capacity to referee or help out at the competition of this size- PLEASE DO SO!
I have been involved in powerlifting for over 15 years in many capacities- lifter, referee, meet director, state chair, EC, competed at numerous national championships and several IPF world BP championships and without question this past weekend was one of the most inspiring experiences I have had in the sport.
Again, congratulations and thank you to all involved!
Marcus:
As Technical Secretary for High School Nationals this year I would like to thank
in particular all the referees that answered the call to help officiate at this championship.
Having 3 platforms and about 350 lifters ,things were going on non stop all day long.
We did not have the luxury of extra referees on stand-by since some officials were already committed
to Collegiate Nationals next week in Denver
Again, thanks to everyone for all the work you did as officials
