From Powerlifting Watch:
Lifter Rankings- Jon announces changes to lifter Rankings;
Due to demand, I've added the 2008 Lifter Rankings to the existing Current Lifter Rankings and 2007 Lifter Rankings. The 2008 Rankings will not initially include the top 50 lifts (top 20 for women) but will be built out as lifts are added throughout the year. Please also be aware that only lifts which will likely be in the top 50 at the end of the year will be included in these Rankings.
The Current Lifter Rankings are the top 50 (top 20 for women) lifts in the past 12 months broken down by weight class and equipment.

2008 Arnold Sports Festival Wrap-up: by Matt Gary, Mid-West team coach, Quest American Pro Invitational
The Arnold Sports Festival celebrated its 20th year of excellence in showcasing a variety of sports performance. The festival is held annually in Columbus, Ohio on the first weekend in March. This year’s celebration was held Friday, February 29 through Sunday, March 2, and hosted 39 events including 14 Olympic sports.
USA Powerlifting joined the festival this year and put on a tremendous display of competitive powerlifting that included lifters from the United States, Canada, Europe, and Japan. Four separate competitions were contested in three days beginning with the Raw Challenge on Friday. Spectators witnessed more than 30 lifters competing in the unequipped competition with only belts, wrist wraps, and knee sleeves being allowed.

Lifters Wanted!- Matt Gary (Men's Coach) seeks lifters for the NAPF North American Regional Powerlifting Championships in Oranjestad, Aruba:
I am still trying to fill the Men's Open, Master’s, Sub-Junior, and Junior rosters for the 2008 NAPF North American Regional Powerlifting Championships in Oranjestad, Aruba. Due to the dates of other USAPL competitions, lifters that would normally leap at the opportunity to compete internationally have chosen to pursue other options. Accordingly, we still have some holes to fill in various weight classes.
I am looking for strong lifters for the following weight classes:
56kg
60kg
67.5kg
75kg
82.5kg
110kg
125kg
This is a tremendous opportunity to gain international lifting experience and this also serves as one of the qualifiers for the 2009 World Games in Taiwan. If you need additional information about the championships please visit the following link: NAPF
Here you'll be able to view the official invitation which will provide you with more information regarding the contest, accommodations, etc.
If you're interested in participating, please contact me immediately at MLGary@aol.com.
From Critical Bench: Interview With Bench Presser "Big Willie" J.T. Hall, III
Interviewed By Ben Tatar of CriticalBench.com - March 2008
1) CRITICAL BENCH: JT, tell us about yourself!
My name is "BIG WILLIE" J.T. HALL, III. I have an A.A. and B.S. in biology. I am the NASA KENTUCKY RECORDS CHAIRMAN & member of the NASA EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE. I have been a competitive powerlifter since 1994. I have competed in 10 different states: KY, OH, IN, WV, VA, IA, MO, NC, IL & TN. I have competed in more than 11 different federations: NASA, BENCH AMERICA II, USAPL, AAU, WDFPF, WNPF, APF, ANNPC, WEOPF, SLP, & APA. My best-equipped competition bench press is 523 lbs & raw bench press is 484 in the 220 class. I have missed 585 & 575 @ lockout last year in the summer/fall. My best training lift is a 625 3-board press, 635 reverse band bench press and an unequipped 495 bench press. I'm a member of the Omega Force Christian Strength Team.
I have won several NASA awards. These are the awards I cherish a lot: The 2007 April Co-Lifter of the Month, 2005 Bench Only Over-all runner up, 2003 & 2004 Bench Only Over-all winner of the Year and 2002 Powersports bench presser of the Year. I have been ranked by Powerlifting USA and Powerlifting Watch. My height is 5'11 and in a 13-month period, I was drug-tested 3 times.
I compete in the Inzer Rage X Bp shirt. I use AtLarge Nutrition Maximum Mass Stack. My pre-workout supplement is BMF Sport: A.C.T. Healthy Energy drink.
2) CRITICAL BENCH: Since your last interview, what have you achieved in the sport of powerlifting?
The biggest achievement for me is to continually give back to the powerlifting community. I enjoy being the NASA KY Record Chairman & on the NASA Executive Committee. This gives me a great opportunity to help lifters at the KY meets and vote on NASA Athletes of the Year. No award or title can compare to this achievement.
3) CRITICAL BENCH: A lot changed since your last interview from 04. Can you tell us what has changed?
I competed at the 2004 Bench America II and was the only KY lifter invited. I competed on the 2004 Team NASA against Team AAU in Richmond, VA. Team NASA did lay the smackdown on Team AAU. NASA is putting on the 2008 Pro Powersports and Pro Powerlifting with almost $40,000 cash giveaway.
4) CRITICAL BENCH: Tell us about the first time you benched 135? What was that like? What about 225? 315? 405? 500? 550? 600+?
I bench press 135 my freshman year in high school and was shocked because I weighed 100 pounds.
I bench press 225 my senior year in high school and was pretty excited.
I bench press 315 in 1995 and bench press 405 and 1997.
That's when I started thinking that I can eventually bench press 500 and 600 drug-free.
I bench press 500 in 2002. After I bench press 500, I jumped off the bench and took off running. I was really, really excited that day of the competition. I missed the mid and high 500 a couple times. I was a little frustrated, but I'll never give up.
I will become a member of the 600 bench press club using an Inzer Rage X bp shirt!

All,
Madvig Solutions, LLC will take up the task of the online rankings system for 2008 and beyond. Thanks, Gentlemen.
Tony Cardella, who is our webmaster will be rebuilding the website over the next few months to implement the design that Lea Foreman worked through for us. As you recall, Lea did the website design that we have now and which presents USAPL in a very positive light. We want to freshen it up some and make it a little more user friendly.
Tony will also be working on the records pages so that we can have a system that allows the user to drill down to look at past records in addition to the current ones.
Thank you all for all you do for USAPL.

From Critical Bench: Interview With Awe-Inspiring Bench Presser Rock Lewis
Interviewed By Ben Tatar of CriticalBench.com - March 2008
1) CRITICAL BENCH: It's Ben Tatar from Critical Bench and I am here with a RAW legend in the sport of bench pressing, Rock Lewis. Rock, how did you get started in the sport of benching?
Rock: My cousin, King McDuffy started me. He had about a 600lbs bench. I started when I was in the military and everyone thought I was strong. I took it from there.
2) CRITICAL BENCH: Rock, you bench pressed 495 for three reps raw with your feet up on the bench the same day you benched 600lbs. How many reps can you do with 495 fresh with your feet down?
I can bench press 495lbs for 8 reps with my feet down. The other day I bench pressed 495 for 6 reps with my legs crossed.
3) CRITICAL BENCH: That is totally insane. Do you usually bench with your feet up or down?

4) CRITICAL BENCH: What is the most weight you have ever bench pressed with your legs crossed before?
Rock: I've done 620 with my legs crossed.
5) CRITICAL BENCH: Oh My God! Ha-Ha! Rock, why do you always train with your feet up on the bench?
Rock: It gives me better upper body control. It takes much more upper body control to bench with your feet up which allows me to get stronger and ultimately bench press more.
6) CRITICAL BENCH: Rock, how did you get so good at unracking your own weight like you did with 560 at the 100% RAW Nationals?
Rock: I do everything by myself. I don't need a bench shirt, spotters or anything else. It's all me.
7) CRITICAL BENCH: You are one of the most naturally strong freaks this Earth has ever seen, no doubt about that. Rock, do you ever intend to compete with gear?
Rock: I do. I would like to compete with gear after I become the first heavy weight bencher to triple his body weight drug free and then I want to go to gear…

Rock: I bench with my feet up and with my legs crossed.

Phillip Battle
Phillip Battle (Vice-State Chaiman, USAPL Viginia) has died at 30 years of age. Phillip was a lifter, meet director, spotter-loader, referee and a friend to all.
Few details are known at this time. Messages are being posted at the Virginia Message Board.
In a note distributed by Niko Hulslander (PA State Chairman/Garage Ink):
A Brother in Iron has past. Folks, I just recently found out that early this morning; Phillip Battle has past away. Phillip was a meet director, judge, lifter, and very good friend. Most of you may remember most recently that Phillip drove all the way up from Virginia to serve at times as head ref for the Garage Ink Invitational. Phillip was very giving to the sport of Powerlifting he sacrificed a lot to make sure he put on a great show. I was honored to be part of his Richmond Open last year and was going to sponsor this year's contest as well. It is very unfortunate to lose a fellow like Phillip. He will be greatly missed. Please join me in praying for his family and friends in this time of sorrow and loss. I will try to get more details tomorrow.

Powerlifting Watch to include results from major unsanctioned meets in lifter's rankings.
From Jon:
I want to thank everyone who provided feedback on whether to add unsanctioned meets to the Powerlifting Watch Lifter Rankings (subs req.) and, if so, in what manner. After much consideration of that feedback, the Lifter Rankings will now include major unsanctioned meets which have published rules which are consistent with generally accepted rules of powerlifting.
The number of events which will meet this criteria is extremely limited and will be the exception. Right now, only the Raw Unity Meet qualifies. Bench America would also have qualified. Fears of every backyard touch and go meet creeping into the rankings are unfounded. Just like all sanctioned meet aren't included in the Rankings (eg. SLP), all unsanctioned meets won't be. By keeping the criteria tight, we're not in any danger of opening the floodgates for questionable unsanctioned lifts to overwhelm sanctioned lifts.
The reason I've chosen this route is due to the fractured state of powerlifting. With fewer federations, moving outside of federation lines to pit the best against one another likely would prove unneccesary. However, with powerlifting as it is today in America, bringing the best together on the same platform becomes much harder. Efforts that do so need to be recognized. The IPA is doing this for multi ply lifters in the form of their Pro-Am events. Unfortunately, no similar success at the federation level has been realized in single ply and unequipped lifting. Allowing unsanctioned unity type meets fills those gaps.
I think it's safe to say that most powerlifting competitors and fans would like to know who are the best raw, single and multi ply lifters and would like to see the same competing together to determine that title. Ultimately, even in a small way, I don't want to discourage events whose aim is just that; events like the Raw Unity Meet and Bench America.
While some may view this move as a ding to the integrity of the Lifter Rankings, I think supporting unity in powerlifting is hugely important, and if the Rankings can do that, their integrity should ultimately be bolstered.

The Virginia Powerlifting Report 3/6/08
Arnold Recap:
In reviewing the statements and reviews made on the various websites, it seems that the overall reaction of the powerlifting community is very favorable to the effort made by the USAPL at this years Arnold Sports Festival. Notable are the comments about the size of the crowds. It was noted that the attendance for the unequipped event that was held on Friday was large. According to accounts, Friday events have not attracted large audiences in the past. Also, judging and the spectacular performances by some of best powerlifters, not only from the U.S.A., but by those from around the world were lauded. The Quest Invitational and the bench finale saw a number of lifters, who traveled from afar to take part in this great annual event, go head-to-head in competiton. Awards for the champions included products and cash.

From Larry Maile (President, USAPL):
I just landed here in Anchorage and wanted to take a moment to thank all of the people who made the USAPL/IPF events at the Arnold Sports Festival a great success. First, the lifters did a great job and they represented USAPL powerlifting well.
The members of the USAPL sports festival committee did a great job. Rick Fowler's media work presented our lifters and our organization with great professionalism. Much of the work behind the scenes goest to Priscilla and Brad who worked exhaustively with sponsors and with athlete selection, notifications, generation of funding, etc. Lance worked with merchandising and marketing and Rob Keller served as the Techical Secretary for the meet, organizing all of the technical aspects of the meet. Johnny Graham worked on logistics prior to and served as platform manager during the Expo Stage events as we didn't have access to the bar load program for the spotters and loaders.
We had five outstanding announcers over the course of the weekend: Lance Slaughter, Rick Fowler, Pat Rankin, Pat Anderson, and Niko Hulslander. The inspired the crowd, provided color, and kept the meets moving. I had numberous compliments on them throughout the weekend.
Joe and Cathy Marksteiner provided their usual professional scoring, and on Saturday, worked separately to run two meets simultaneously. Great job.
IPF President Detlev Albrings, General Secretary Emmanual Schieber, and Vice President Susumu Yoshida were present. One thing you have to say about this administration: They pitch in and work. At one point we had two regional and one IPF president loading weights.
Our very generous sponsors helped make this event possible. When we tally up the account sheets, it hopefully will come out a wash and it largely due to the financial support of GNC Properformance, Titan Support Systems, Elieko Sport, and Quest Nutrition.
Working with Mr. Lorimer's staff was a great experience. They were helpful, supportive and wanted us to succeed. We were visited by Mr. Lorimer several times, several members of his staff, and on Saturday, Governor Swarzenegger also visited the Quest Invitational and spoke for a few minutes.
Thanks to Billy Kazmeier who spoke briefly onstage during the Titan Pro Bench Bash and was very supportive of USAPL/IPF powerlifting.
Finally, if there is one person without whom this event would not have been possible it has to be Greg Page. Greg was responsible for transporting most of the equipment, arranging the spotters and loaders, platform managing, providing the moving carts, receiving and shipping the USAPL merchandise and worked every day starting Thursday afternoon, dawn til well after dark and is probably still working. Greg represents the very best of our federation.
Thank you to all for all of your hard work and support. Without the 50 or 60 volunteers who pitched in, this meet would not have been a success.
From Deltev Albrings (President, IPF):
Dear Larry, dear athletes, dear members of the festival committee, dear sponsors, dear powerlifters and guests at our events at the Arnold's,
On behalf of the IPF I would like to congratulate you all for this exciting events and impressive 3 days in Columbus. Without the support of all, who are mentioned in Larry's post, we will not have so well organised events.Personally I want to say a big thank to you for the hospitality and friendship also for the experience to test pancakes at Bob Evans. It was also very impressive for me to watch other kind of sports and the atmosphere at this Festival and at the Expo.
It was a great show and it described the abilities of the USAPL to manage events, which inspire the audience. I was one day earlier at the Columbus Great Convention Center and I learned the logistics to organise such championships on different stages. The organisation at the Expo stage must be very on time and there is less possibilty to overrun the time of the slot, then all the other sports at the Expo stage want to present themselves.
I can fully confirm the post of Larry and I hope to see you all next year to our second edition in Columbus.
From Mike Sweeney (WPC President):
I was there on Saturday for the three contest. The judging was fair and consistant, the lifters had a blast and the fans were on their feet more than once. I wasn't us, but it doesn't have to be, would I come back to watch this......absolutely! Good Job!....you all represent your organization very well!!!!!!
From Rick Fowler (USAPL State Chairman, MS):
Ok gang,
Here's a quick recap from the weekend. I've got a bit of a mixed report from the meet.
First and foremost, I'd like to give an update on Jeff "The King" Lewis. I just spoke with him and his is in great spirits. The plan is to do an ultrasound, see exactly what the damage is and go from there. He can actually stand on his left knee which is a good sign. The right side we are unsure about. They are not convinced just yet that the both patellas are torn and will no more once the swelling goes down. He did say that the rush of walking out to the crowd that was there, was like nothing he had ever felt. He said he could feel the energy from each and every one of you, and wanted to thank everyone in attendance.
Thanks to the Bill McDonough and the rest of the SLPD crew he trains with, he is currently back in town and at a local hospital. Longtime training partner Willie Lemeire drove him back that night and the rest of the pack followed. Special thanks to his training partners who stood buy, brought him back and provided the muscle to move him at the hospital.
That being said, aside from that was a HUGE success. Anyone present for the Mens Nationals we held last summer can remember how intense that was....The Quest Invitational was that, plus more people and on a larger stage. USA Powerlifting was able to duplicate that intensity plus some and in front of a wider audience. Great job to everyone who played a part.
Anything I wrote would be incomplete if I failed to mention my partners in announcing, Lance Slaughter, Dr. Patrick Anderson and Pat Rankin. Lance teamed up with me on Friday for the Raw Challenge, Pat Anderson was on hand for the Quest Invitational and Pat Rankin. These guys made my job easy and I can't thank them enough. A great job by three guys.
For those who were unable to attend, the event had huge video screens, speakers 20 feet in the air and a booming sound system. We ran music the entire time, even when the lifter was lifting. There was nothing quiet about this event, the only thing it lacked was a 2 drink minimum. It was rock concert quality with rigging up above and stage lighting that lit the center up nice and bright.
You can't imagine what a rush it was for me to announce this. Not just that, but looking out in the audience, perched atop a 6 foot riser, and seeing the vocal crows supporting our guys was enough to give me chills.
I'd personally like to give a special thanks to Brad Manion, a training partner of mine. Brad and I flew up on Thursday and our plan was to play a part in setting up that morning. With the weather and traffic, the first truck of equipment didn't arrive until 8pm and the race to setup began. Our second load from Pennsylvania arrived with Niko Hulslander at around 10pm. It's a great feeling to know you've played an important part, and Brad was a huge helping hand to our skeleton crew. Along with that, on Friday, Brad took a horseshoe and with his hands, bent it into the shape of a heart. I've seen him do these feats a million times and the crowd seemed to be pretty impressed with his steel bending.
Thanks also to Putt Houston who came to the meet St. Louis for the sole purpose of lending a hand wherever he was needed. He said he'd do whatever, wrap knees, spot, pickup trash, etc. Putt helped Elliot Feldman to coordinate backstage the lifters who were on deck and assisted in getting them ready in time. Simply put, Putt is powerlifting through and through. He was a great help and at a moments notice when I needed to kill a few minutes he and I improvised to give a nice interview.
I also need to thank Pat Rankin and Wayne Eilermann who drove from the Gateway City for making the trip. Pat teamed up with me to announce the GNC Deadlift on Saturday and the Reverend delivered the goods. He and Wayne go way back to Jr. High School and being around these guys is a treat. They are the Odd Couple and the banter went on the entire weekend. My sides hurt today from laughing at these two. They roomed with me and although Pat says Wayne and I snore, I still say it was actually Pat and Wayne.
The staff, many who go unnoticed and played behind the scenes rolls, involved in pulling this off should take a deep breath and be satisfied for a job very well done. It was a pleasure to work with all of you.
I could spend days writing and telling you more, but I'll rely on everyone who was there to share some of their great stories.

100% RAW Responds to BMF Allegations:
In a statement which was posted at the 100% RAW and Powerlifting Watch, Paul Bossi (President-100% RAW) responds to suggestions that there are"inconsistencies and improprieties" with the drug testing program at 100% RAW.
Paul Bossi:
I am Paul Bossi. I am the president of the 100% RAW Powerlifting federation and I am posting this to set the record straight about recent allegations of "inconsistencies and improprieties within 100% RAW".
Incident 1: After the Bench Worlds last year, one of the urine samlpes broke while in shipment to the lab. It leaked and washed the information off of the labels on 4 samples. The lab informed me of this and I told them to go ahead and run the samples because I didn't think any of them would come back positive anyway. One of them came back positive for desoxymethyltestosterone (DMT). We could not determine beyond the shadow of a doubt who's sample tested positive so we took no action.
Incident 2: I allowed a lifter to lift in the Bench Worlds who was within 1 month of serving out his suspension with the USAPL. I did that as favor to him with the understanding that he would be tested at the worlds. He tested positive at the worlds and has been banned from 100% RAW for 5 years. His name has not been removed from the results quite honestly because I have been so busy that I have not taken the time to do it. As soon as I get a new website administrator the results will be updated.
It seems that every time I try to help someone I get burned. That is my decision. 100% RAW is my federation and I will run it as I see fit. If you have questions about what I do, contact me directly. Please don't listen to rumors. I try to run a fair organization and rules will be followed. However, if there is any doubt, I will not ruin a lifter's career.
BMF - Good luck with the new direction you have chosen and thank you for all the work that you did for 100% RAW.

From Critical Bench; Interview With Herculean Bench Presser Frank Caminita
Interviewed By Ben Tatar of CriticalBench.com
Frank Caminita recently bench pressed an astounding 705 pounds weighing 198lbs! Let's step into Frank's mind and take an in depth look at how he became so powerful.
1) Critical Bench: Frank, please tell us a little bit about yourself!
Well to start, I am 37 years old and I am a newly wed. I married a Finnish Woman (Liisa) this past December. I met her in Finland while competing in the WPO. I am a Respiratory Therapist but I don't practice in a hospital anymore. I now work for Draeger Medial. Draeger Medical makes Anesthesia Machines, Adult and Neonatal Ventilators. I travel around the country during the week training Doctors and other Respiratory Therapist how to use the latest technology. I have been lifting weights since I was 13 years old.
2) Critical Bench: Most people can't fathom benching 300lbs, 400lbs, 500lbs, or 600lbs at any weight. Tell us, what was it like bench pressing 705lbs at 198lbs?
I get asked this question quite often and I always tell the same thing. It was heavy! If you watched the video you can see it was a grinder.
3) Critical Bench: The video is posted at the bottom of the interview for all to admire. Give us the run down about your lifting career and powerlifting career up until this point.
Well to begin, I started lifting weights when I reached my 13th birthday. My uncle Ronnie liked lifting weights and he gave me my first set of cast iron weights with a bench press on my 13th birthday. The set came with a curl bar and a tricep bar. I can remember always trying to max just about every workout. I can remember the feeling of getting stronger because I always tested myself. By the time I was 15 (a freshman) I was hitting 230 Raw while weighing 145. A schoolmate James Leblanc who did powerlifting noticed my talent and introduced me to the sport. I can remember my first meet in high school. At 148 I did a 365 Squat, 250 Bench and a 350 Dead all Raw as a sophomore. By the time I was a senior my best lifts were a 510 Squat, 325 Bench and a 440 Dead at 148. My Squat was good and my dead was just ok but my bench was freakish for a 148er at that time.
4) Critical Bench: How did you go from a 315 bench to a 405 bench? Tell us about your training between those two bench press barriers!
After my first powerlifting meet my dad made contact with a college buddy who he knew was a powerlifter. His name was Roger Gorumba. Mr. Gorumba had a serious bench press himself. He did a 405 at 148 Raw in like the 70's. I started training with him. He taught me how to benchpress old school. It consisted primarily of Raw benching and dumbbells, dumbbells, dumbbells and dumbbells. Which I still do to this day. After high school I started to gain weight so my bench went to over 400 immediately.
