The Virginia Powerlifting Report 1/21/08
Raw United- A New Federation?
RAW United should not be confused with Raw Unity.
Despite the disclaimer on their website, this organization promotes meets, has its own set of rules and records, a website to help promote its mission and has a schedule of meets where 100% RAW is also participating. Recently, Paul Bossi has come out in support of one of its stated goals of holding a unified raw national championships. You be the judge; click here. Discuss here or here.
Conversely, Raw Unity will now be a once a year event where the best in the country/world can come together and compete to be recognized as the national champion. It is promoted by its founder, Eric Talmant.
Like 100% RAW, RAW United was founded by Spero Tshontikidis.

"The Pull Up:" From Matt Gary
Matt has written another in a series of excellent articles about powerlifting training. Matt and Sioux-z spoke at length about the pull-up at the seminar they conducted last September.
The squat is the unrivaled king of all strength training exercises. It is unparalleled in its overall effectiveness at taxing the entire body. The ankle, hip, and knee joints are all in motion thus ensuring that nearly every major leg muscle is utilized. Additionally, one’s hips, entire back, shoulders, and abdominals are also stressed. The squat is the cornerstone movement of any strength and conditioning program. If you were only allowed to perform one exercise, the squat would be the best choice as it strengthens nearly everything. An argument can also be made for the deadlift or the clean and jerk. However, the squat works more muscles than the deadlift and the clean and jerk is so highly technical that skill proficiency is not easily attained. Conversely, most people can learn to squat.
If the squat is the king of all exercises, then the pull-up should be acknowledged with the same royalty. Simply stated, the pull-up is the squat for the upper body.
